zeZebra: P2P File Transfer With Bandwidth Control & Contact Management

There are a lot of P2P file sharing applications available on the internet, but most of them are slow, unsecure, sometimes limited in terms of file size that can be shared, or too difficult and complicated to send files to other users. If you are looking for a tool that’s free, simple, fast and secure, check out zeZebra. It is an application with eye candy interface that lets you transfer large files in a simple and easy-to-understand way. It enables you to send a file of any size to any person, and allows you to adjust transfer speed and number of simultaneous transfers, thus giving you total control over aspect like bandwidth usage, target recipients and other such parameters. If you send a lot of files to the same people, the application has a contacts manager to quickly send the files instead of adding the information every time.
When you run the application for the first time, enter your name and email address to access the main interface. This information will be used to identify you during the file transfer process. The main interface of zeZebra has Send New File button at the top, and zeZebra menu at the top left, while the files being transferred and information about the transfer such as Upload/Download Speeds etc, appears at the bottom.

To send a file, click Send New File, choose the service and enter the contact details to send a download link.

When you send a file, the recipient will have to download zeZebra first to receive the file. Once the recipient has installed zeZebra, it will automatically detect the link and begin the file transfer.

The application requires the approval of recipient before beginning the file transfer, and allows both parties to pause and resume downloads at any time.

Click zeZebra and select Settings to edit General, Plugins, Traffic, Profile and Contacts. It lets you toggle outlook plugin, adjust transfer speed and number of simultaneous transfers, edit profile and manage contacts.

It is worth noting that the program requires both users to be online at the same time, since it’s primarily a P2P file transfer service that does not upload your data anywhere. zeZebra works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

ServiceCommander: Manage & Monitor Windows Services On Networked PCs

Some days ago, we covered Windows Service Monitor, an open source utility that lets you monitor, start and stop user-specified services directly from the system tray without having to open the Windows Task Manager or Service Control Manager. Today, we have another tool, ServiceCommander, that allows you to Start, Stop, Pause, Resume or Restart selected services on any computer on your network from the system tray. What sets ServiceCommander apart from the formerly-reviewed tool, is its ability to control and manipulate services on networked PCs, a highly useful feature for many system/network administrators. The program lets you easily add services to the monitoring list, and displays the control functions of each service in the system tray. It also enables you to start, stop or restart all added services at once, as well as direct access to the default Windows applications of Service, Event Viewer and Task Manager.
The application has Services and Options tab at the top, service list appears in the middle, while buttons to Add, Remove, Move Up, Move Down and Remove All appear on the right side. To add services in ServiceCommander, click Add button to access the Add Services window.

In the Add Services window, first choose the computer from which you choose to add services. Then, select the services you would like to add and click OK.

The Options tab lets you configure ServiceCommander startup behavior, Actions available in the Menu (Start, Stop, Restart, Pause, Resume) and Menu Entries (Configure, All Services, Tools).

In the system tray icon, the running services will be denoted by a green dot before their name. The services can be controlled by right-clicking the application’s icon, selecting the application and choosing the desired action.

Whenever a services is started, stopped, paused, resumed or restarted, a system tray notification popup informs the user regarding the success or failure of the desired action.

ServiceCommander lets you access the Service Control Manager, Event Viewer and Windows Task Manager directly from the application.

Friendeye: Switch To User-Specified Screen Brightness With A Click

Back in 2009, we covered F.lux, a cross platform tool that adjusts the color contrast of your computer screen according to the time of day. Color contrast and brightness are the two basic settings that effect, and put strain on, your eyes. You can especially feel the strain on your eyes during night time, if you use the same brightness settings as day. Just like F.lux changes the contrast, Friendeye is a portable screen filtering application that lets you manually select a brightness level for your computer screen. It allows you to switch to the user-specified screen brightness level with just a click. More about Friendeye after the break.
Usage is extremely simple. Just run the application’s executable, and it will start in your system tray. The system tray icon responds to the left and right mouse clicks in different ways. If you right-click the application icon, it will take you to the settings page, where you can adjust the percentage of brightness you want to be dimmed. For instance, if you select 75% in the settings page, upon activation, you will only have 25% brightness left on your screen. To activate the application, just left-click with your mouse on the system tray icon of the application, and the brightness will be instantly dimmed. Click the icon again to restore brightness.

Warning: Do not set the dim level to 100%; it will make the screen go completely black, and you will have to restart your system to restore the brightness settings to normal. Friendeye is an open source application, and works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Firefox 9 Available For Download, JavaScript Performance Increased By 20-30%

Firefox 9 is now available for download, with some huge performance improvements. One of the features Firefox 9 has introduced, is the Type Inference, which basically improves the JavaScript performance. This new feature can speed up the browser’s JavaScript performance by up to 30%, and comes with better integration with OS X and lots of stability enhancements. Also, many other stability enhancements and bug fixes have been added to the new version. Firefox 9 is not yet available through the official update channel, but you can easily download it from official Mozilla website.
The new version of Firefox comes with support for font-stretch, improved text-overflow and overall standards support for HTML5. Moreover, Firefox 9 also fixes several other CSS stability issues. It also offers Mac OS X Lion users with the new two-finger swipe navigation, and improved theme integration.

The added Type Inference feature significantly improves JavaScript performance by 20-30%, as compared to Firefox 8. Since the update to Firefox 9 is not yet available through the official update channel (going to Help > About in Firefox will still show Firefox 8 as the latest version, at least at the time of writing), you can either wait for it to become available, or simply download it from the Mozilla link given below.

Weezo: Share, Transfer And Gain Remote Access To Hard Drive Content

Weezo is a remote access/file sharing application that lets you gain remote access to the content on your computer, such as photos, music, videos and documents. You can either access the items in your computer from a remote location, or share them with your friends with safe, immediate and unlimited file sharing ensured. Weezo takes the concept of file sharing, and simplifies the process to such an extent that its just a matter of sharing a link and password to give your friends access to your hard drive folders. Other than sharing data, music, videos, documents etc, the application also allows you to give remote desktop access, remote startup and shutdown, and lets others view your webcam in their browsers (with your permission, of course). Before you can start using this program, you will have to configure the application. The configuration process is made quite easy by a very helpful Weezo wizard, that guides you through the whole process. First, enter your Account Name, Email address, Password and click Validate.

While configuring Weezo, the Windows firewall will ask you for permissions at some point. Click Allow Access to let the application communicate on Private and Public networks.

Once the configuration process is complete, you will be asked to start Weezo in Simple Mode or Expert Mode. It is advised to select Simple Mode when using the application for the first time.

The application does not come with any difficult options or configuration menus, and sharing content is pretty easy. The Resources pane at the left has different categories, such as Files, Music Sharing, Video Sharing, Webcam, Multimedia, Photo Album etc, while the sharing settings appear in the right pane. To share a file or folder, choose a category in the left pane (we selected Music Sharing), enter a folder name under Name, and drag the files and folders that you want to share under the area titled Files. A URL Link and Password will be automatically generated by the application. The URL Link can be shared via simply copying it to clipboard, generate a QR-code and by using Email, Facebook, Twitter or AddThis.

Share the link with someone along with the password to enable access to your files and folders. The web-app of Weezo lets you view documents, play videos and listen to music directly form the browser, eliminating the need to download most multimedia content to the hard drive.

All the other categories are as easy to configure as Music Sharing. Just select a category from the left side and follow the same process to share them with others. Weezo also allows sending content to various recipients. Select the Send pane from the right side, choose the folder that you want to send and click Create to create a New Direct Link to download the file.

Add ‘Extended Version’ & ‘Hash Checksum Info’ In File Properties

The massive world of internet contains tons of applications, tools and software. Sometimes, it may happen that you are not be able to find which one is a fabricated tool, and which comes straight from the developer. Developers mostly generate the Hash of a download bundle, which is quite useful in checking the file integrity of something that you are about to download. Previously, we covered Hash generators such as HashSlash and SFV Ninja, stand alone applications that generate Hashes and check the integrity of files. FilePropsMan is a Windows Explorer shell extension that adds two tabs, namely Extended Version Information and File Hash Information, to the Windows Explorer File Properties menu. It lets you view deatiled version information about the file included by the developer, as well as generating CRC32, MD5 and SHA-1 Hash codes to verify against the ones provided by the developer.
After the installation of FilePropsMan, you might have to restart your system once to be able to view the two new tabs in file properties. The first tab is named Ext. Version info (Extended Version Information), that allows you to view the File Version, Description, Copyright Information and other information such as Comments, Company Name, File Version, Product Name, License etc.

The second new tab that will be added is named Hash Information. It lets you calculate Hash functions using CRC32, MD5 and SHA-1 checksum protocols, and copies them from within the tab to compare them with the ones provided by the developer on the product page. If the codes match, that means the files are in their original state. If the codes differ, it means that the files have been tampered with and are not safe to download.

Start Menu 7: A Transparent, Customizable, Easy-To-Navigate Start Menu

With every new release of the Windows operating system came along a lot of changes in its interface. One of the most important menus, the Windows Start Menu, has also gone through a lot of UI changes over the years. Even after all those changes, it is still a bit difficult to find the desired items in the Start Menu, and it is even more difficult to add custom folders or categories to the menu to organize your items. Change Windows 7 Boot And Resume Screens With Windows 7 Boot Updater

Although we have seen a dozen of Windows 7 boot animation changers in the past to customize Windows 7 boot screen, almost all them require heavy tweaking with a bunch of system DLL files in order to replace Windows 7 default boot screen with customized one. iTunes Match Officially Launches Internationally

After what some are calling an “accidental” launch on Wednesday, Apple has now begun rolling out its iTunes Match service around the world. Reports suggest the service has already reached the UK, Australia, Canada, France , Spain and Ireland as well as Brazil which received the service earlier this week.

Customers who signed up prematurely on Wednesday soon encountered problems using the service and were notified via email that they would be receiving refunds. Today the service appears to be officially available via iTunes in Windows or Mac OS X.
iTunes Match scans personal storage for music and delivers it across a range of devices, offering up streaming and downloadable options. If iTunes detects a song it recognises then a DRM-free 256kbps AAC file is made available. If iTunes fails to recognise a song then that file is uploaded and made available instead.

Audiophiles around the world can find the iTunes Match service in their “Quick Links” bar on the right-hand side of iTunes if the service is available. Users should also be aware that the scanning and uploading process can take a while, especially when it comes to particularly large collections.
Current pricing from around the world puts a year’s worth of iTunes Match at €24.99 in Europe, £21.99 in the UK, CAD$27.99 in Canada and AUD$34.99 in Australia.

New PuTTY Release Fixes Password-not-wiped Vulnerability

Simon Tatham has released a new version of PuTTY, the ubiquitous SSH client for Windows, that fixes a bug that left passwords in active memory. Since PuTTY needs to authenticate with remotes servers using passwords or private/public keys and that it needs to store sessions keys etc in memory while running, it is important that any information that is no longer needed be wiped from memory.
The reason for this is that it is feasible that malware could gain access to PuTTY’s memory or read any parts of the memory swapped to disk or any memory written to a crash dump. Accessing this memory could then lead to password discovery.
Although this scenario isn’t 100% avoidable (as PuTTY needs to keep some sensitive information on hand), the risks can be reduced as much as possible. PuTTY 0.59, 0.60 and 0.61 contained a bug in which the password entered was not wiped from memory, even though it was no longer needed.

Since most modern SSH-2 servers use the keyboard-interactive method for password logins (rather than SSH-2′s dedicated password method), this meant that those versions of PuTTY would store your login password in memory for as long as they were running.

Other bugs squashed in 0.62 include:

• Pageant 0.61 would not accept connections from PuTTY 0.60 and earlier, or from other software (such as WinSCP) that used 0.60′s method of talking to Pageant. Pageant 0.62 accepts connections from both types of client.
• If PuTTY 0.61 attempted GSSAPI authentication and failed, it printed a spurious and confusing ‘Access denied’ message in the terminal window, even though it was still possible to log in by other means.
• If PSCP or PSFTP 0.61 was told to load a saved session which specifies SSH on a port other than 22, they would wrongly try to connect to port 22 instead of the specified port.
• Pageant 0.61 leaked a file mapping handle every time it received a message with the wrong authentication.
• PuTTYtel 0.61 crashed with an assertion failure message when saving a session.
• PuTTY 0.61 could display underlined text with the underlines in the wrong place, to the right of the characters they should have been under.
• PuTTY 0.61 could display VT100 line-drawing characters at the wrong vertical offset if they appeared next to the offset horizontal line characters.

Winamp 5.623 Released to Fix Vulnerabilities

Winamp, the popular media player, has been upgraded to 5.623 to fix three security related vulnerabilities along with several non-security related bugs.
Secunia reported two of the security issues to Nullsoft, a division of AOL, back in November. Now that fixes are available Secunia have disclosed the nature of the bugs.
According to Secunia’s security advisory they discovered two vulnerabilities in Winamp, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user’s system.

• An integer overflow error in the in_avi.dll plugin when allocating memory using the number of streams header value can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted AVI file.
• An integer overflow error in the in_avi.dll plugin when allocating memory using the RIFF INFO chunk’s size value can be exploited to cause a heap-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted AVI file.

The list of fixes in 5.623 also note a “bounds check for comments parsing” bug that was fixed. Such out-of-bounds bugs are often exploitable.

FTC To Give Refunds to 300,000 Victims of Scareware

Following a settlement with Innovative Marketing and other parties involved in the Winfixer, Drive Cleaner, and XP Antivirus scareware schemes, the Federal Trade Commission is to start giving refunds to the victims.

The settlement, which is worth more than $8 million, was reached after the defendants agreed to hand over the money they gained from scaring users with deceptive ads making them think their computers were infected with malware. Once hooked the users then bought bogus software to fix their non-existent problem.
Approximately 320,000 checks, for an average of $20, will be mailed by the FTC’s settlement administrator, Epiq Systems. Consumers have 60 days to cash the cheques.

Adobe Premiere Pro (Windows/Mac OS )
