Read Comments On YouTube Without Losing Video Playback Focus [Chrome]

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

One problem with watching videos on YouTube is losing screen focus from the playback as you scroll down to read comments. YouTube As It Should Be, a Chrome extension, offers a new way to browse and watch video content on YouTube. The extension works around the losing focus issue by elegantly adding scroll bars to related video content and comments block, eliminating the need to scroll away from video player to view comments and related content. Furthermore, a toolbar with forward/backward, autoplay and shuffle buttons is added to the bottom of the page. You can also view thumbnail previews of all related videos by hovering your mouse over all video clips.
With this extension, you can watch the video and read comments at the same time. The comments section gets a scrollbar of its own, shrinking the panel from its original size so that the video never moves out of focus. A toolbar with useful buttons is also added to YouTube Videos, allwoing you to switch between previous/next video, auto play and enable shuffle. Moreover, the thumbnail previews allow you to quickly skim through a video’s content without actually needing to play it, thus making it easier to find content of your interest.
video&comments
Scroll bars are also added to the related videos panel, so you can easily scroll down them while continuing to watch the currently-playing video.

This is quite a handy extension that improves your YouTube video watching experience. It gives YouTube an elegant look and lets you enjoy videos and comments at the same time. Visit the link below, try it out, and let us know what you think.

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

There are a lot of P2P file sharing applications available on the internet, but most of them are slow, unsecure, sometimes limited in terms of file size that can be shared, or too difficult and complicated to send files to other users. If you are looking for a tool that’s free, simple, fast and secure, check out zeZebra. It is an application with eye candy interface that lets you transfer large files in a simple and easy-to-understand way. It enables you to send a file of any size to any person, and allows you to adjust transfer speed and number of simultaneous transfers, thus giving you total control over aspect like bandwidth usage, target recipients and other such parameters. If you send a lot of files to the same people, the application has a contacts manager to quickly send the files instead of adding the information every time.
When you run the application for the first time, enter your name and email address to access the main interface. This information will be used to identify you during the file transfer process. The main interface of zeZebra has Send New File button at the top, and zeZebra menu at the top left, while the files being transferred and information about the transfer such as Upload/Download Speeds etc, appears at the bottom.
zeZebra Main Interface
To send a file, click Send New File, choose the service and enter the contact details to send a download link.
zeZebra - Send To ..
When you send a file, the recipient will have to download zeZebra first to receive the file. Once the recipient has installed zeZebra, it will automatically detect the link and begin the file transfer.
zeZebra Sending
The application requires the approval of recipient before beginning the file transfer, and allows both parties to pause and resume downloads at any time.
zeZebra Permissions
Click zeZebra and select Settings to edit General, Plugins, Traffic, Profile and Contacts. It lets you toggle outlook plugin, adjust transfer speed and number of simultaneous transfers, edit profile and manage contacts.

Enable Functional Table Of Contents For Any Website [Chrome]

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

When browsing through blogs and content-rich websites, how many times have you actually read everything? It becomes rather tiring to find the right material, especially if the website in question comes with a lot of text. TableOfContents is a Google Chrome extension that makes navigation of webpages easier by allowing you to toggle the Table-of-Contents (ToC) for the said page. It creates an expandable Table-of-Contents list, which conveniently allows you to access the headings of lengthy articles. Clicking on a particular heading highlights it, and the webpage content is navigated accordingly. TableOfContents gives users a overall view of what a webpage consists of, rather then displaying selected parts.
Once the extension is installed, a button is added right next to the URL bar. Whenever you come across a huge website, simply click this button to enable the TableOfContents view. Contents are listed to the left of the page, whereas the webpage will be displayed to the right. Headings are highlighted when clicked, and webpage content changes accordingly. With this extension, you no longer need to scroll down long webpages and look for your favorite articles. Simple click a heading and start reading. You may also change the width of the Table-of-Contents panel, and the area occupied by the webpage.

This extension might prove particularly useful for students who read lots of research papers online. It quickly lets you find your desired content when you’re short on time, or in a rush. Grab it from the Chrome Web Store link below.

Friendeye: Switch To User-Specified Screen Brightness With A Click

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Back in 2009, we covered F.lux, a cross platform tool that adjusts the color contrast of your computer screen according to the time of day. Color contrast and brightness are the two basic settings that effect, and put strain on, your eyes. You can especially feel the strain on your eyes during night time, if you use the same brightness settings as day. Just like F.lux changes the contrast, Friendeye is a portable screen filtering application that lets you manually select a brightness level for your computer screen. It allows you to switch to the user-specified screen brightness level with just a click. More about Friendeye after the break.
Usage is extremely simple. Just run the application’s executable, and it will start in your system tray. The system tray icon responds to the left and right mouse clicks in different ways. If you right-click the application icon, it will take you to the settings page, where you can adjust the percentage of brightness you want to be dimmed. For instance, if you select 75% in the settings page, upon activation, you will only have 25% brightness left on your screen. To activate the application, just left-click with your mouse on the system tray icon of the application, and the brightness will be instantly dimmed. Click the icon again to restore brightness.
Friendeye
Warning: Do not set the dim level to 100%; it will make the screen go completely black, and you will have to restart your system to restore the brightness settings to normal. Friendeye is an open source application, and works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Get Dial Pad In iOS Notification Center To Make Phone Calls [Cydia]

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Before notification center came along in iOS 5, Android had a bit of an advantage in terms of usability, mainly due to the availability of widgets. However, now, using the Notification Center provided by iOS, users can do a lot through that part of the platform, especially if you have a jailbroken device. We have covered a number of Notification Center widgets in the past, like our post on the best available NC widgets for iOS 5, and today, we bring you another useful addition to the arsenal of available tweaks dedicated to Notification Center. NCInstaCall is a Cydia tweak that allows jailbreak users to make phone calls right from within the notification center.

NCInstaCall NCInstaCall Settings
NCInstaCall is a free tweak, which can be downloaded from the Big Boss repo over at the Cydia store. Once you have done that, don’t try looking for any changes in your iPhone’s notification center. Even though the tweak does not have an app icon displayed on the Springboard, there is a dedicated menu for it in the Notification Center’s settings. So, after installation of NCInstaCall, you have to manually enable it. This can be done as follows.
  1. Go to your iPhone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Notification Center menu.
  3. You will find the tweak’s settings in that area. Just enable it, and you are done.
Once the tweak has been enabled, a new widget will appear in the Notification Center. Tapping it opens up a dial pad in the notification area, which is pretty similar to the stock keypad offered in iOS. Of course, there is no address book support in NCInstaCall, and you will have to dial any number just from your memory, but still, that is better than having nothing at all, and it’s not like you have to pay for the tweak. So, if you are on iOS 5, and have access to the Cydia store, do give the tweak a try.

CoRD: Better Alternative To Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection [Mac]

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Yesterday, we reviewed Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (MRDC), a Mac app that allows you to remotely connect to any Windows PC and access it. One of our readers sounded off in the comments about CoRD, citing it was better than the aforementioned app, and we took a crack at it. CoRD is a free, open source Mac app that allows you to connect with any Windows PC, and is similar in functionality to Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection (MRDC). It allows you to control how audio is played, lets you access files on your Mac through the Windows PC you are connected to (without breaking the connection), and control just about everything on it. With both apps being so similar, and with the exact same price (read free), the deal maker for us was how fast the changes made on the other end were reflected on the Mac, and Cord definitely performed better. Granted, there was the minor glitch or two, but the only major inconvenience we faced was that the screen never froze, which was fairly common with Microsoft’s app.
Once installed, you can start adding any number of systems to access from your Mac. Both the Mac you’re using, and the PC you’re trying to access, should be on the same network, and you must know the IP address of the PC. To connect a system, click the Servers button on the top right corner of the app window. A slider will open, click the plus button on the lower left of the panel. In the window that opens, enter the system name and the system’s IP address.
CoRD
Once you’ve entered the system’s name and its IP address, you can customize the screen size, audio settings, and whether the desktop background should be visible or not.
CoRD Connection settings
To create a connection, double click a configured connection from the Servers pane, and the app will connect with the system.
CoRD active session
You can set these preferences separately for each system you connect to, or enter a default setting from the app’s preferences. Go to the Default tab and select default settings for display, audio and printing. To make one or more disks on your Mac available through the connection on your Windows PC, go to the Forwarding tab and add it.
CoRD default
While both apps are similar in functionality, the make or break in a remote access desktop app is often on how stable a connection it creates, and CoRD definitely appears to have the upper hand, as far as our tests show. Since they’re both free, you can easily try them out and pick a favorite for yourself.

QuickText: Visual Studio ReSharper Like Text Expansion For Notepad++

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

QuickText is a multi-purpose text expansion/text substitution plugin for Notepad++, that lets you create tags for most frequently used code modules and structures, so that you don’t have to write them over and over again. In a nut shell, QuickText is to Notepad++, what ReSharper is to Visual Studio. While it offers a convenient configuration console to define the tags and their substitution text, you can easily make changes to defined substitution text, and edit and modify ‘tags’ text. The Tab key is a trigger key. Once you’ve defined the tags and substitution text, all you need is to write the tag, press the trigger key, and it will replace the tag text with defined substitution text.
QuickText supports a wide range of programming languages, including HTML, PHP, C, C++, XML, ASP, SQL, VB, Objective-C, Java, Fortran, Perl, Assembly and so on. If you’re a web developer and hate to press ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ keys on keyboard while writing HTML, PHP, XML etc tags , QuickText will change the way you define tags in HTML and other markup languages; you can associate head tag with <head>, and /head with </head> in its Options dialog, Once set up, just write head and then press Tab key, it will immediately replace it with <head>. Similarly, you can associate as many tags as you want to save not only the time, but also the effort involved in complying with programming language syntax.
Since it doesn’t impose a limit on lines or characters that can be substituted, you can define an entire code module, such as Java class declaration with indented code block and starting and ending parenthesis, with tag to quickly replace it with defined code module. QuickText comes with both Unicode and ANSI versions. Before you begin installation, bring up About Notepad++ dialog from ? menu, and check the Notepad++ edition. If it’s UNICODE, unzip the download package, and copy QuickText.UNI.dll to Notepad++/plugins folder, whereas for ANSI edition, copy QuickText.ANSI.dll to Notepad++/plugins folder.
unicode
Once correct plugin version is copied, launch Notepad++, and open Options from QuickText menu, which is accessible from Plugins.
quicktext
In QuickText Configuration, just pick the language from left sidebar and then enter the Tag name. Now, you have to enter the substitution text that will replace the tag text. The screenshot below shows if-else construct tag for Java language. Likewise, you can create tags for just about any language of your choice.
quicktext config 1
Moreover, if you want to create text expansion function for normal text, choose Normal Text from Languages, and then add text tag followed by substitution text. Clicking OK will save the changes made to text snippet repository.
normal text
Since QuickText deals with saved text snippets separately according to the defined programming language, you can create multiple snippets with same name for different programming languages. It first checks the file type, and then replaces the text snippet. This means you can create tag by the name of Class for Java, C, C++, VB and other programming languages without having to worry about text replacement conflicts.
quicktext 1
Sadly, it doesn’t support defining text placeholders, which would’ve made it even more useful, but it brings the most powerful text substitution controls for application developers. If you use Notepad++ for your coding projects, we recommend using this extension to speed up the development process.
It supports Notepad++ 5.4 and higher. Testing was carried out on 5.9.3.

WordPress v2.0 For Android Brings Revamped UI, Easier Text Editing & More

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

WordPress is certainly among the most extensively used blogging tools and online Content Management Systems out there. The official WordPress client for Android has been around in the Android Market for quite some time now, but compared to the website itself, said client was a far cry in terms of the editing features that it offered. However, things have changed quite drastically with the recent update that the app has received. The updated (v2.0) WordPress client comes packed with a brand new Dashboard, post editor and Quick Action toolbar with rich text editing options as well as full support for Android tablets. Details to follow.

WordPress-2-Android-DashboardWordPress-2-Android-Quick-Access-Bar
The new dashboard displays all the core WordPress features and is accessible from almost anywhere within the app’s UI via a button that sits in the top-right corner of the screen. Among other options on the bar at the top of the app’s homescreen, you have the choice of switching between multiple blogs from the dropdown menu, and refresh the app’s content manually.
WordPress-2-Android-Add-MediaWordPress-2-Android-Preview
The aforementioned Quick Action toolbar remains visible just above the keyboard while you’re editing your posts, while in previous versions, you had to scroll all the way to the bottom of the post to find them. Not only does the new toolbar make it extremely easy to edit text and add required media content, it comes packed with a few new options as well, such as inserting quotation marks and page breaks. Tapping the camera icon on this toolbar lets you capture fresh photos or videos, import existing media from the gallery, and add it to the post. For each image that you add, you are presented with the choice to rename it, insert a caption, adjust its alignment and dimensions. Each post that you create can also be previewed before publishing, that is, you can view what the post will look like on the blog itself, and determine if you need to make any changes to the format.

Add ‘Extended Version’ & ‘Hash Checksum Info’ In File Properties

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

The massive world of internet contains tons of applications, tools and software. Sometimes, it may happen that you are not be able to find which one is a fabricated tool, and which comes straight from the developer. Developers mostly generate the Hash of a download bundle, which is quite useful in checking the file integrity of something that you are about to download. Previously, we covered Hash generators such as HashSlash and SFV Ninja, stand alone applications that generate Hashes and check the integrity of files. FilePropsMan is a Windows Explorer shell extension that adds two tabs, namely Extended Version Information and File Hash Information, to the Windows Explorer File Properties menu. It lets you view deatiled version information about the file included by the developer, as well as generating CRC32, MD5 and SHA-1 Hash codes to verify against the ones provided by the developer.
After the installation of FilePropsMan, you might have to restart your system once to be able to view the two new tabs in file properties. The first tab is named Ext. Version info (Extended Version Information), that allows you to view the File Version, Description, Copyright Information and other information such as Comments, Company Name, File Version, Product Name, License etc.
fences_public.exe Properties
The second new tab that will be added is named Hash Information. It lets you calculate Hash functions using CRC32, MD5 and SHA-1 checksum protocols, and copies them from within the tab to compare them with the ones provided by the developer on the product page. If the codes match, that means the files are in their original state. If the codes differ, it means that the files have been tampered with and are not safe to download.

Do you often find yourself mistyping your passwords, especially when you’re in a hurry? With Visual Hashing, an extension for Chrome & Firefox, you no longer need to worry about typing wrong passwords. After you’ve installed the add-on, you’ll be able to see a four-color visual hash in every password field, and the hash will change colors as you type. You can think of the hash as being your password’s fingerprint. With time, you’ll remember the colors associated with each password, enabling you to detect mistyped passwords and prevent you from entering wrong ones.
As you type your password, Visual Hashing displays four colored boxes in the password field. These colors change as you type, and at the end, your password gets a specific color combination. So, when ever you mistype a password, you’ll quickly figure it out by detecting a change in the color combination.

With every new release of the Windows operating system came along a lot of changes in its interface. One of the most important menus, the Windows Start Menu, has also gone through a lot of UI changes over the years. Even after all those changes, it is still a bit difficult to find the desired items in the Start Menu, and it is even more difficult to add custom folders or categories to the menu to organize your items. Start Menu 7 is an application that replaces the default Windows Start Menu with a detailed, easy to navigate and customizable Start Menu. Details after the jump.
When you install the application and launch Start Menu 7, the first thing you will notice is that the menu is semi-transparent. This allows you to view your desktop and running application at all times without blocking icons or items from the view. You can easily create, modify or rearrange items from the button available at the top-left corner of the menu. Each application is already placed into a separate category, and easy accessible directly from the Start Menu, without having to expand/collapse panels.

How to remove Malware (reported by Chrome) from Blogger in 5 minutes!

Delicious Digg StumbleUpon Reddit Subscribe to RSS Feed

Have Chrome ever reported the existence of malicious software (malware) on your Blogger-powered blog before?

The reason why I posed the above question today is because I’m seeing more and more Blogger-powered blogs that have such warnings reported by Chrome and Chrome happens to be my preferred internet browser of choice. The sight is disturbing but what is more disturbing is the fact that some bloggers didn’t pay much attention to such malware reports! What were they thinking?!

I can give you plenty of reasons why bloggers should pay serious attention to the existence of malicious software (malware) on their blogs but I will only list 3 today.

Malicious software (Malware) makes you lose traffic

Take a good look at the following screenshot. Chrome clearly said that my computer may catch a virus if I visit a blog that is quite popular here in my part of the world. Chrome even provides me with a big ‘Go back’ button so that I can click on it and go back to the last safe zone. Just imagine how many potential visitors the 'infected' blog had lost!

Bad news travel fast!

Yes, bad news does travel very fast and soon people will be talking about the existence of malicious software (malware) on your blog. The news might end up on social networks and soon people might get scared to visit your blog. There goes your blog and your reputation as a blogger down the drain!

Malicious software (Malware) gives you distinct 'recognition', recognized by major search engines

Take a look at the following screenshot. Once you have malicious software (malware) on your blog, failure to remove it in a timely manner will be ‘punished’ severely by major search engines such as Google. Your blog will be labeled harmful and the label is clearly seen in search results pages (SERP). If you are searching for something via Google and stumbles upon search results with such warnings attached, would you go and visit that blog?

Alright! I have given you enough reasons and I hope you are now convinced that malicious software (malware) is not something that should be taken lightly. Now come and learn how to remove malicious software (malware) from your Blogger-powered blog in 5 minutes.

Yes, it is that easy!

How to remove malicious software (malware) from Blogger

Once you saw warnings such as the one shown earlier on Chrome, note down the ‘element’ identified as malicious. In this particular example, the malicious element originates from another blog (nasionalis1946.blogspot.com).

Go back to Chrome and visit your ‘infected’ blog. Quickly view the live page source of your blog and use Chrome’s ‘Find’ tool (hit Ctrl+F) to look for ‘nasionalis1946.blogspot.com’ in your live page source.

Once found, find out how it got there in the first place. See if it is coming from an installed widget or gadget. Based from past experience, most of the time it did came from one! In the example shown down below, the link to that malicious blog is generated after the blogger behind the ‘infected’ blog added it to his or her existing list of blogs in the Blog List gadget.

Thankfully, this is pretty easy to resolve. The blogger behind the ‘infected’ blog can simply edit his Blog List gadget from his or her Blogger Layout dashboard and remove the blog that is causing the ‘infection’ from the list. Everything should be fine after the removal has been made and the new list saved back to Blogger!

There you are! Nasty malware removal for Blogger in just 5 minutes! :)
